Obituary for John Cleo Kraus

John Cleo Kraus, 69, De Soto, Kansas passed away Saturday, June 29, 2019. Funeral service will be 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at Bruce Funeral Home, 106 S. Center, Gardner, Kansas 66030 (913-856-7111). Visitation will be 10:00-11:30 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at De Soto Cemetery, De Soto, Kansas with Military Honors. John was born on April 18, 1950 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Johnny Laymon and Carmen Carnell (Webb) Kraus. He grew up in the De Soto area. John graduated from De Soto High School in 1969 and served in the United States Army from 1970-1972. He married Sheila Jean McCormick in De Soto, Kansas on August 3, 1970. He worked at the Hercules Army Ammunition Plant in construction and production for 10 years. John was fond of playing golf, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed exploring during his walks along the Kaw River, collecting Native American artifacts and the opportunity to tell historical stories. Special holidays for John and his family were Christmas and July 4th. He especially enjoyed the family BBQ’s and time together with his grandchildren. John also served on the committee for the De Soto Days festivities.

John was preceded in death by his parents, brother Randy Kraus and grandson Corey Lamar. He is survived by his wife Shelia of the home; children Shannon (Eric) Carnell of Eudora, Kansas and Dustin Charles (Shauna) Kraus of Overland Park, Kansas; siblings: Louise Kraus, De Soto, Kansas, Carolyn McClanahan, De Soto, Kansas, Wayne Kraus, De Soto, Kansas, Donnie Kraus, El Dorado, Missouri and Rodney Kraus, Smithville, Missouri; six grandchildren: Kaleigh Kraus, Lauren Lamar, Noah Lamar, Ben Lamar, River Howard and Addison Howard and great-grandson Gannon Marvine and dog Tidbit, his special companion.
