Obituary for Neil Stanley Hertzler

Neil Stanley Hertzler, 83, of Gardner, KS passed away July 25, 2019 at Olathe Hospice House. Celebration of Life will be 5:00 pm Sat., August 3rd, 2019 at New Life Community Church, 17935 Moonlight Rd., Gardner, KS with military honors. Visitation will be held 3:00 – 5:00 pm Sat. before the service. Inurnment will be at a later date in Gardner Cemetery, Gardner, KS. Neil was born June 5, 1936 in Kansas City, MO to Lyle E. and Geraldine “Gerry” (Dolisi) Hertzler. He was a life-long area resident who graduated from Gardner High School in 1954. Neil served in the United States Army from 1959 until 1965. He attended Baker University and finished his BA at Emporia State University. Neil married Eileen Ashworth on Aug. 12, 1961 in Starks, LA. He worked for International Harvesters as a Color Design Engineer (now known as Navistar International) for thirty-three years in the Motor Truck Division; retiring in 1994. Neil was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a former member of First Presbyterian Church of Gardner and had been attending New Life Community Church with his family. Neil was also a member of the Gardner American Legion and a former member of the Gardner Jaycees. Neil loved gardening, fishing and camping and was a skilled wood craftsman building cabinets and other wood projects. He was a history buff and a “man of his own pace” who will be missed by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Neil is survived by his wife, Eileen, of the home; daughters: Kathy Hertzler and Peggy and husband Chris Coffman, both of Gardner, KS and granddaughter, Danielle Hertzler; step-granddaughter Carli Coffman; the Gourmet Dinner Group of 43 years whose members include the Peters, Kramers, Thomens and Pearces; brother-in-laws: Calvin, Prentice, Sonny, Lynn and Marvin Ashworth; sister-in-laws: Nina June Howard, Wanda Butler and Sharon Woodard and many nieces and nephews.
